Synopsis
SYNOPSIS - full
In Chinese, Yin Yin means your 'father's mother', Jade Love is the English translation of the grandmother's name, Yuk Oy. The title represents the grandmother she knew and the woman that was discovered.

Yin Yin/Jade Love is a documentary about a granddaughter's discovery of her grandmother after she has died. The film simultaneously explores the emotional impact of the filmmaker's last visit with her grandmother, her death, what was subsequently discovered about her extraordinary life, and childhood memories surrounding her and her home. The narration, by the filmmaker, is supported by past (VHS, 8mm, historical stills), present (16mm) and recreated (Super 8) images that are woven together creating a rich densely layered reflective collage. Yin Yin/Jade Love hopes to capture a portrait of the filmmaker's Yin Yin and convey insight into the experience of loss, discovery and regret.

LOG LINE
Yin Yin/Jade Love is about a granddaughter's discovery of her grandmother, after her death.

Background of the film:
Losing my grandmother, who I called Yin Yin, was a profound emotional experience in my life. After she died, fragments and vague stories about her past were slowly revealed through my relatives. I was extremely intrigued with the contradictions and unanswered questions. Yet frustrated why I had not been told these stories before or asked Yin Yin about her life. I realized that I needed to find out who she was as an individual before she was my Yin Yin. In doing so, I hoped to come to terms with my mourning. As for the film's title, it represents the grandmother I knew and the independent woman I discovered. Yin Yin, in the chinese culture means my "father's mother", Jade Love is the english translation of her chinese name, Yuk Oy.

Description of the film:
Yin Yin/Jade Love is experimental in nature and consists of woven memoirs, and documentary material. It explores the emotional impact from my last visit with my grandmother, her death, what was subsequently discovered about her life, and my childhood memories surrounding her and her home. The film's narrative structure closely reflects the way I discovered her, in fragmented, scattered, and fading memories. The film begins with a present-day visit to her former house and this acts as the device to segue into historical sequences. Present-day images are filmed in 16mm to contrast the historical material, i.e., 8mm homemovies, vhs video, archival documents, family photographs and Super 8mm recreations, forming a motif to facilitate the viewer's ability to recognize my reflection from present to past throughout the film.
